LaDawn Tate lived her life fearlessly.

Not because life was easy, but because she refused to let pain, stigma, loss, or silence define her story. Instead, she turned every challenge into purpose and every struggle into a testimony that could light the way for others.

For more than a decade, LaDawn stood at the intersection of advocacy, housing justice, and HIV leadership, using her lived experience to transform systems and uplift communities. As Lead Housing Peer Support Specialist for the Our WORK Supportive Housing Program, she worked on the front lines of compassion helping people find stability, dignity, and hope when life had pushed them to the margins.

LaDawn was not just a worker in the field, she was a builder of movements.

After joining the Southeast Michigan HIV/AIDS Council (SEMHAC) in 2018, she served as its Chair from 2020 to 2024. Through her leadership, she helped shape conversations around housing, care access, and community-driven solutions for people living with HIV.

Her advocacy extended nationally as a PWN Policy Fellow, a member of the U.S. People Living With HIV Caucus, and a participant in other leadership spaces where lived experience was not only welcomed but honored. She believed deeply that the voices of people living with HIV belonged at the tables where policies were made.

But beyond titles and committees, LaDawn’s greatest gift was her voice.

After being diagnosed, she refused to live in silence. Instead, she spoke boldly about stigma, survival, healing, and possibility. She carried a message that became her signature declaration:

“Everyone is HIV Possible.”

To LaDawn, this meant that people living with HIV are not defined by a diagnosis but by their strength, brilliance, and ability to thrive.

She organized events that brought communities together, wrote grants that created opportunities, mentored emerging advocates, and reminded people that their lives mattered, especially those who felt forgotten.

Her story, captured in her memoir “Fearless,” reflects a life lived with radical honesty, courage, and love for her community.

LaDawn believed that fear lost its power when people decided to live their truth out loud. And she did exactly that.

Her legacy is not only found in the programs she strengthened or the policies she helped influence, but in the countless lives she touched, and through the people who found hope because she dared to stand up, speak out, and keep going.
