MAGA Republicans are moving quickly to rip Medicaid away from millions of people so they can supercharge immigration detention and give massive tax breaks to the wealthy.

The House Energy & Commerce Committee is deciding how deeply to slash critical Medicaid funding TOMORROW and the House is trying to finalize Medicaid cuts by the end of May! Their proposal, which came out late last night, would slash Medicaid to pay for tax cuts for the 1% while leaving more people under- or uninsured. We cannot keep allowing the passage of unfair tax policies that disproportionately benefit the wealthy while making working class and poor communities suffer -- including by taking health care and food security away from millions.

Affordable health care is a right, not a privilege. Medicaid is the largest source of insurance coverage for people with HIV in the US, covering an estimated 40% of the adults with HIV. The $500 billion cut, as put forward by House Republicans, could throw more than 20 million people off of the program. Proposals to cut Medicaid would increase strain on state budgets, drive more people into medical debt, and deepen existing healthcare coverage inequities.

We fight for our healthcare by fighting together. It’s no coincidence that Republicans are using the same process (known as “reconciliation”) to make devastating cuts to Medicaid, strip federal funds from abortion providers, snatch food from families, ban gender affirming care, give tax cuts to billionaires, and infuse billions in the Trump administration’s anti-immigrant crackdowns. This is a part of the coordinated assault on the rights, health, and safety of people living with and communities most impacted by HIV.

• The Trump regime is terrorizing migrant and immigrant families by disappearing, detaining, and deporting people using taxpayer money.

• Trans communities are being targeted by cruel federal and state policies that seek to erase their existence and erode their human right to bodily autonomy. 

• The Trump regime is using the thinly veiled guise of “anti-DEI” to justify their white supremacist agenda, including dismantling policies that combat structural racism and anti-Blackness.

• They are trying to steal, consolidate, and control our personal information, and could ultimately use that information to crack down on immigrant communities and others that the Trump regime wants to punish. 

• DOGE’s dismantling of USAID and PEPFAR has disrupted HIV care and prevention, contraception access, food security and more across the globe, and especially in sub-Saharan Africa.
