#HIVIsNotACrime: Sanjay Johnson Urgently Needs Your Help

Sanjay Johnson is a 25 year old gay Black man and incredible artist from Little Rock, Arkansas, facing unjust HIV criminalization exposure charges since August of 2017. He was accused by a consensual one-night stand of transmitting HIV, even though his labs show he had an undetectable viral load within one week of the hook-up, and even though his accuser does not actually want to see him go to jail.

Sanjay needs your assistance! He is currently awaiting trial for October 4, 2018. There is a fundraiser to help pay for legal fees for his defense. He needs your help to avoid an unjust, lengthy prison sentence.

PWNers Put Their Bodies on the Line to #CancelKavanaugh

PWN members Shelia Crockett (TX) and Olga Irwin (OH) were among hundreds of activists who, with the support of our friends at Housing Works, Center for Popular Democracy and Women’s March put their bodies on the line last week to disrupt the hearings of Trump’s nominee for Supreme Court, Brett Kavanaugh.

This nominee has a terrible record on reproductive rights and worker rights, as well as believing the president is above the law–he has said the president should not be investigated, questioned by criminal prosecutors, or indicted while in office. He would turn the balance of the Supreme Court against human rights for decades to come.

Last week was not their first arrest for acts of civil disobedience. Both were active on Capitol Hill last year in the successful effort to block legislation that would have repealed the Affordable Care Act.

Read more about the Kavanaugh protests here.

The Capitol Hill protests will continue next week! If you live in the Washington, D.C., area or within driving distance and are interested in showing up to protest Kavanaugh’s confirmation hearings, fill out this form.

Can’t make it to D.C.? You can still make a difference! Call your Senators today at (202) 224-3121 and urge them to vote NO on Kavanaugh’s confirmation.

See our action alert here for more information.

Kelly Flannery Joins PWN-USA as Legal Fellow

Positive Women’s Network – USA is excited to welcome Kelly Flannery on as our new If/When/How Reproductive Justice & HIV Legal Fellow!

Kelly graduated from New York University School of Law with honors in May 2017. During law school, Kelly was a member of multiple legal clinics. Kelly helped support the National Advocates for Pregnant Women as they challenged a state statute that subjected pregnant women accused of drug use to state-sponsored surveillance, detention, and forced medical intervention. Kelly also served as an intern at the New York Legal Assistance Group’s housing division and the National Institute for Reproductive Health.

After law school, Kelly was the NYU fellow in Human Right’s Watch’s women’s rights division. She focused on sexual and reproductive health and rights in the United States. Kelly has a forthcoming report that documents barriers to cervical cancer-related services and information caused by policies, practices, and racial and socioeconomic inequalities in Alabama. Prior to law school, Kelly received her bachelor’s degree from Elon University and her master’s degree in philosophy from the New School for Social Research.
